The Challenge

Our clients wanted something that seemed impossible at first - a family home that'd produce more energy than it uses while still feeling warm and inviting. They'd seen too many "eco-homes" that looked like science experiments, y'know?

Our Approach

We spent months getting the orientation just right. Every window placement matters when you're trying to hit net-zero. The south-facing glass captures winter sun, while deep overhangs keep things cool in summer. We integrated geothermal heating with a smart thermal mass system that basically turns the house into its own battery.

The exterior cedar cladding isn't just pretty - it's locally sourced and provides an extra layer of insulation. Solar panels are tucked into the roofline so they don't scream "look at me, I'm sustainable!" The whole thing just... flows.

The Outcome

This place produces about 110% of its energy needs annually. The family's actually selling power back to the grid. But what really makes me proud? Their kids have friends over constantly because it's such a comfortable space. That's the real test, right?

Distillery District Loft

The Story

This warehouse sat empty for decades. Original brick from 1892, massive timber beams, and more character than you could ask for - but it needed serious love. The heritage designation meant we couldn't just gut it, which honestly made the project way more interesting.

What We Did

Every original brick was catalogued and cleaned by hand. Sounds tedious? It was. But those bricks tell a story. We exposed the timber structure and reinforced it with hidden steel where needed - the engineering on this was pretty wild. New mezzanine levels float within the space without touching the historic walls.

Modern glazing in the old window openings brings in tons of light while maintaining the original proportions. The HVAC and electrical? All tucked into custom steel conduits that look intentional, not like an afterthought.

The Result

Now it's a creative agency's headquarters. The space has this amazing tension between old and new - exposed brick meets polished concrete, rough timber beside sleek glass. We got a heritage conservation award for this one, but the real win is seeing it full of people and energy again.

Green Tech Hub

The Vision

A tech company wanted their building to reflect their values - not just greenwashing, but legitimate environmental leadership. They gave us a tight downtown site and said "surprise us." Challenge accepted.

The Design

We went vertical to maximize the footprint, then wrapped the whole thing in a dynamic facade system. Triple-glazed panels with integrated photovoltaics adjust based on sun position and interior temperature needs. It's like the building has its own nervous system.

Inside, we used a raised floor system for maximum flexibility - companies change fast, and the space needed to adapt. Rainwater harvesting on the roof feeds the cooling system and irrigation. Even the parking garage has EV charging at every stall and bike storage that's actually pleasant to use.

Impact

LEED Platinum certified, 65% reduction in energy use compared to baseline. But numbers only tell part of the story. Employee satisfaction surveys show people actually want to come to the office now - the air quality, natural light, and biophilic design elements make a real difference. That's what sustainable design should do.
